Are You Anointed or Just Gifted?
In the world of Christianity, the terms "anointed" and "gifted" are often used interchangeably. Many believers use these words to describe the abilities and talents they possess, but there is a subtle difference between the two. Understanding the difference can help us better understand our spiritual gifts and how to use them effectively in the service of God.
At Elan Church, we believe that every believer is gifted by the Holy Spirit to serve in the body of Christ. The Bible teaches that "each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms" (1 Peter 4:10). However, not everyone who is gifted is necessarily anointed. Let's take a closer look at what these terms mean.
What Does it Mean to Be Gifted?
To be gifted means to have a natural talent or ability that can be used for the glory of God. These abilities can be in areas such as teaching, singing, evangelism, administration, or serving. The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone, it is the same God at work."
We are all gifted in different ways, and each gift is important for the functioning of the body of Christ. Just as each member of the human body has a different function, so too do we have different roles to play in the church. We are called to use our gifts to serve others and build up the body of Christ.
What Does it Mean to Be Anointed?
To be anointed means to have the power of the Holy Spirit upon you to accomplish a specific task or ministry. The word "anointing" comes from the practice of anointing kings and priests with oil in the Old Testament as a symbol of their authority and commissioning. In the New Testament, we see the anointing of Jesus, who was anointed by the Holy Spirit to do the work of the Father (Acts 10:38).
Anointing is not the same as gifting. While a gift is a natural talent or ability, anointing is a supernatural empowerment for a specific purpose. Anointing is often associated with a particular calling or ministry, such as preaching, healing, or evangelism. It is the Holy Spirit working through us to accomplish His purposes.
How to Discern Your Anointing
Discerning your anointing is not always easy. It requires prayer, seeking God's will, and being open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Here are a few steps to help you discern your anointing:
Ask God for wisdom and guidance. James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
Look for confirmation from others. God anointing often speaks to us through the people around us. Seek input from pastors, mentors, and other believers who know you well and can provide insight into your strengths and weaknesses.
Experiment with different ministries. Sometimes, the best way to discern your anointing is to try different things and see what feels natural and fruitful. Get involved in your church and community and see where you feel most effective and fulfilled.
Be patient. anointing vs. gifting Discerning your anointing is a process that takes time. Don't be discouraged if you don't find it right away. Keep seeking God and trusting in His timing.
